PreCalculus

Course Description: What Is This Class About?

This is an advanced mathematics course which deepens knowledge of classes of nonlinear functions beyond the course content of algebra 2.  The course will be individualized for the students and, depending on the requirements of the student, may also introduce concepts important to calculus in preparation for calculus in college.

Rationale: Why is it Important To Learn This?

Learning about mathematical theories and practices improves critical thinking and problem solving abilities. In addition, taking advanced math courses in high school will help students succeed if they chose to go on to college.  PreCalculus will be particularly helpful to students planning to study mathematics or the sciences in college.

Prerequisites: What do I need to know before taking PreCalculus?

Passed Algebra 2

Course Goals: What Are We Going To Do In This Class?

Based on the needs of the student, PreCalculus will cover additional classes of mathematical functions, will cover previously studied mathematical functions in more depth, and/or will introduce concepts from calculus to prepare students for college mathematics courses.   While covering the course concepts, students will learn to talk about mathematical functions, tackle real-world problems, strengthen their conceptual foundations and understand the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

Course Concepts:

Functions can be used to model problems in real life.  The problems can be described algebraically, graphically, or with tables and the problems can be solved by the most convenient method.  Depending on the needs of the student PreCalculus can deepen knowledge of any of the classes of functions covered in Algebra 2 as well as introducing concepts of proof by induction and limits.

Grading:
Students will be graded on class work, homework, quizzes, tests, and, if applicable, Cognitive Tutor (online portion of the class).
